Food is a central part of everyday life and enjoying food we are familiar with and which brings back memories is very important to our identity.
But many asylum seekers and refugees live in accommodation where they can’t cook meals which remind them of home. Thanks to a grant from Hackney Council we have set up a series of community meals, which enable refugees and asylum seekers to shop for food they like, use our kitchen to cook it together with similar people and then eat it with others in our building as part of a community meal.
The event brought together people from many countries, who all live in Finsbury Park. They devised an amazing menu and created delicious food which we all enjoyed together.
There will be similar events over the next few months and we hope that people will feel more at home in our vibrant part of north London.
